Valuing People Objective:

Valuing People reminds us that people with learning disabilities from minority ethnic communities face substantial inequality and discrimination in accessing employment, education, health and social services and that this needs to change: people with learning disabilities from minority ethnic communities must no longer be marginalised or excluded.

Fulfilling Lives

W hat we have done so far...

• Formed a sub group of people who have a wide knowledge base.
• Become members of a regional network (NWTDT).
• Attended the “Valuing All People” residential workshops (3), where we observed and shared examples of good practice with other authorities.
• Developed an action plan as part of the updated Joint Investment Plan.
• Began the implementation of 5 Person Centred Plans for families from BME Communities.
• Organised half day Person Centred and Ethnicity Planning event
• Identified champions within each of the other sub groups.
• All champions undertaken diversity training.

What we plan to do in the future?

• Continue to provide and review cultural awareness and diversity training for all front line staff.
• Completion of the 5 Person Centred Plans for families from BME Communities.
• Complete an Equality Impact Assessment.
• Conduct an audit of BME people with a learning disability within Wigan. Working in partnership with PCT and their pilot scheme and utilising the Valuing People LD and Ethnicity Audit Tool.
• Continue to promote and increase awareness of cultural and diversity issues as they relate to people with learning disabilities in BME Communities.
